What is CIF?

Tax Identification Code

The CIF (Código de Identificación Fiscal) is the tax identification number for legal entities in Spain: companies, associations, cooperatives and other organisations. It is equivalent to the NIF but applied to organisations rather than individuals.

CIF structure

The CIF has 9 characters: an initial letter indicating the entity type, followed by 7 digits and a control digit or letter. The initial letter identifies the legal form: A (Sociedad Anónima / PLC), B (Sociedad Limitada / Ltd), among others.

What is CIF used for?

CIF is mandatory on invoices, contracts, tax filings and dealings with public authorities. It uniquely identifies any Spanish company.
